HAGERSTOWN — The North Carroll girls basketball team pulled away from South Hagerstown in the second half Friday night in a 49-43 victory over the host Rebels.

The game did not get off to a rousing start, as the first quarter ended with South up 8-7. The Rebels (4-17) stretched their lead to 25-19 in the second quarter with their best period of shooting, going 8 for 14 from the floor. Kendra Berkley led the Rebels with six points in the first half, going 3 for 3 off the bench.

North Carroll’s Megan Heindel scored 13 of her game-high 21 points in the first half.

“We play well in the first half of games this season,” said South coach Amy Deeds. “But the second half is completely different.”

Deeds’ words became a reality as a rejuvenated North Carroll went on a 7-1 run at the start of the second half to tie the game at 26. North Carroll (7-15) went on to outscore South 20-12 in the third quarter to take a 39-37 lead. Cidney McFarland scored eight points in the quarter for the Panthers.

The Rebels struggled in the third quarter, shooting 4 for 13. For the game, South shot 35 percent from the floor.

“It’s the story of our season. If we play good defense, we play bad defense,” Deeds said. “We either play great or play terribly.”

South retook the lead briefly in the final period on baskets by Courtney Showe and Alexis Small, but a five-minute drought killed any momentum the Rebels had as North Carroll scored six points in the lull.

The Panthers fared slightly better than South, shooting 41 percent from the floor.

Deeds can only speculate as to what happens to her team when it falls apart.

“It’s like they lose their confidence and that’s it. They force their shots,” said Deeds. “It’s frustrating because we have talent on this team. Teams we should have beaten we haven’t.”

Katrice Dickson paced the Rebels with nine points. Alexis Small added six points and had 14 rebounds.

JV: South, 51-39 (SH: Stewart 16, NC: Zachman 11).
