Hawks run out of gas in Frederick

FREDERICK, Md. — All it took to decide the outcome of Thursday’s night’s Maryland JuCo Tournament women’s quarterfinal game between Hagerstown Community College and host Frederick Community College was a four-minute stretch of the first half.

Frederick turned a 17-16 deficit into a 31-19 lead with a 14-2 run, and Hagerstown never got within nine points after that as the Cougars eliminated the Hawks, 74-59.

“It was mostly turnovers,” said HCC coach Marlys Palmer, whose Hawks committed 22 turnovers in the game. “We didn’t handle their press, and compounded by that, we’re not a team that’s a good team coming from far down.”

Kristine Mial scored nine of her 17 points in the decisive run for Frederick (23-4). The Cougars went into halftime leading 44-29 after Pricilla Moseh made a 40-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer.

“Maybe if we were within 10, we could have come back, but they hit that 3 at the end of the first half, and ...” Palmer said.

Yolanda Pinkcett did all she could to give HCC (21-6) a chance, scoring 21 points — 17 off offensive rebounds — and grabbing 12 boards. But the rest of the Hawks couldn’t find the range offensively as they finished 21-for-75 from the field (28 percent).

“We played defense as hard as we could play, but there wasn’t any gas left in the tank,” Palmer said. “We weren’t able to score. We were one-dimensional. Yolanda played a great game, but otherwise, the people we rely on to score weren’t there tonight.”

Phyllis Martin scored 15 of her 27 points in the second half to help Frederick keep HCC at bay. She also had 10 rebounds, while Mecca Newton added 11 points.

Alessandra Flores had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Hawks.
