Mail Call - Feb. 17

February 16, 2011

"I'm calling regarding the article on Special Olympics floor hockey and Coach Jay Seipler. Jay is a wonderful person. He's an excellent coach, and a good person. He has worked in the field of disabilities for well over 25 years, and there is absolutely nothing he would not do for his fellow man. There should be more people in America like Jay."

"I would like to thank the young man who helped me get my car ... after getting stuck on a snowbank ... on Dual Highway. He went out of his way to make sure the car was driveable. Thank you also to the numerous people who stopped to ask if I needed any help. The world still has many kind people. Thank you to all of them."

— Hagerstown

"To the person from Cearfoss who was calling about recycling the DVDs: You can take them to the library, you can take them to Western Maryland Hospital, you can take them to the VA center. Any place like that is more than happy to have DVDs, or even CDs, anything like that, any charitable organization."

— Hagerstown

"I'd like to dedicate Joni Mitchell's 'Big Yellow Taxi' to the fire department of Mercersburg, on their tearing down the William Smith house for a parking lot."

— Cascade

"There's lot of concern about the 16 acres of hospital property, but does anyone know what the owners plan for the 14 acres of Pangborn near the park, the fairgrounds, and a flood plain? Also, I'd like an update of the city light, recycling plant, and Central Chemical properties."

— Hagerstown

"If this would be the old West — which in some ways it should be — all this money wouldn't be spent on trials and retrials for the prisoners. They'd be taken out and shot or hanged, not set in prison like a king."

— Hagerstown

"I'm just reading about the library construction starting up next week, and again, I wonder why they're wasting so much money. There was nothing wrong with that library. It's a beautiful building. And if we have all of these off-site library branches in Williamsport, Boonsboro and so forth, why couldn't we build ... or even taken over one of these empty megastores and turn it into a library? I don't understand why they have to go tear down a perfectly good building and put up something new, when they could reutilize something."

— Hagerstown

"I was calling about the $23.8 million being spent on the new library. What was wrong with the library? I used it many times. I've never had to wait in line, or had issues with overcrowding, ever. $23.8 million, more tax dollars wasted, the downtown tore up, and people saying it's going to boost the economy, people saying construction workers are going to boost the economy. This is not the way you redevelop downtown."

— Maugansville

"This is another comment about what religion God is. God is not a religion, or a God that someone makes up to suit yourself. God is the Bible God, and it is a relationship in Christ Jesus. Anything else is idol worship. Read your Bible, and do not read false prophets."

— Hagerstown

"On the subject of carrying a handgun for common citizens, I think it should absolutely be allowed. I think it would be a much calmer society. I would feel much safer myself, being in a bank that's being held up, if I knew one of my fellow citizens possibly had a gun. I think we would have a lot more calmness, and it would be a much better society."

— Washington County

"I'm an old man. I've seen a lot of wars, and I think everybody ought to be required to carry a gun. If everybody carried a gun, everybody'd be a lot nicer. And you've seen what happened in Germany in World War II ... and then the police could do anything they wanted to do to the people. So I think everybody ought to be required to carry a gun."

— Hagerstown

"If the politicians truly want to protect the bay, they should pass a law banning liquid manure from being applied to snow and frozen ground. When it rains or snow melts, the manure runs directly into the streams feeding the bay, killing all aquatic life on the way to the bay. Agriculture is a sacred cow, so nothing probably will get done."
