Richard E. Shatzer, 72, passed Feb. 15, 2011, after a brief illness.  

Born May 31, 1938, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of Mary Jane (Angle) and the late Weldon K. Shatzer.

Mr. Shatzer attended schools in the Hagerstown area, graduating in 1956. He went on to graduate from the American Academy of Funeral Science in New York City, and served his apprenticeship at the A.K, Coffman Funeral Home. He was employed by the Witzke Funeral Home of Catonsville before his retirement.  

He also served the Maryland Veterans Commission in Baltimore as deputy director and was legislative liaison and special projects coordinator for the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs in Annapolis. He assisted Gov. O'Malley as adviser for veterans affairs during his campaign and with his transition team.

Mr. Shatzer was a veteran himself, having served three years with the U.S. Army, 18 months of which were spent overseas in Italy.  He played trumpet in the Army band.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine Burkhard Shatzer; daughter, Melinda Shatzer Bowersox and her husband, Gordon; and two grandsons, Spencer Gordon and Chance Angle Bowersox.

Graveside services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, Md.
