February 16, 2011

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — A fire Tuesday night completely destroyed a barn off Winebrenner Road and equipment stored inside, causing an estimated $125,000 in damage, according to Shepherdstown Fire Department Capt. Brian Fluharty.

An unknown number of piglets died in the barn, but their mother survived, Fluharty said. The cause of the fire in the approximate 50-foot by 100-foot structure, which was near the Jefferson County-Berkeley County line, was not determined, Fluharty said. The fire was reported at about 8:30 p.m.

Assisting Shepherdstown volunteers were responders from Bedington and Baker Heights fire departments in Berkeley County, Friendship, Citizens and Independent fire companies in Jefferson County and firefighters and ambulance from Sharpsburg, Boonsboro and Washington County, Md., Fluharty said.
