Mail Call - Feb. 15

February 14, 2011

“Could please somebody tell me why 1,112 registered voters and only 70 voted? And I have a grandson who is on his way to Afghanistan, just to help the people build a country so they can vote. Could somebody please explain that to us, what is wrong in America today?”
— Washington County
“If you do not call in to a doctor’s office before your appointment and cancel it, sometimes they charge you. But how come sometimes when you go to a doctor’s office, once they schedule your appointment and then tell you that they did not schedule it on their schedule or in the computer, but you have the card, they tell you to come back the next day, or they cannot see you that day. Shouldn’t your next visit be free?”
— Smithsburg
“I would like to thank Williamsport Councilman Larry Jessop. I have lived in this town for over 50 years, and you, sir, are a breath of fresh air. You honestly seem to care about the people and what there is for the youth to do in this town. The town does not need people in there that are simply focused on their own special interests and special projects that make them look good. God bless you.”
— Williamsport
“As I was driving in the snow this morning on my way to get beer and cigarettes, I was following an old pickup truck with historic tags. As we pulled into the parking lot, I noticed him put down his cell phone and park. He did not have to turn off his headlights because they weren’t on. Also, I noticed both turn signals appeared to be broken, as he did not use them. Finally, as we were paying for our essentials, I saw him using food stamps as payment. ... You know, you just can’t make this stuff up.”

“Feb. 3, 2011, Herald-Mail classifieds: You can tell things are bad when there are more foreclosures listed in the classifieds than help-wanted ads.”
— Hagerstown
“I used to be a registered Republican, but that ended many years ago, when I sat down and I tried to think of three things that each party has given to the working man in this country. Nixon gave us Watergate, Reagan gave us the Iran Contra arms deal, Bush gave us weapons of mass destruction. On the other hand, the Democrats have given us Social Security, Medicare and now health insurance.”
— Hagerstown
“In a perfect world, there would be no use for guns, but we need to be realistic, that this is not a perfect world, and there are — crime does exist, and as U.S. citizens, we have the right to bear arms. My husband works for an armored car company, and I thank God that he’s able to carry a handgun in case he would need to use it as protection, given the economical status of today. And I’m also thankful that we have that in case we would need to protect our family and children.”
— Williamsport
“In response to the caller about opening a no-kill animal shelter, I so much agree with you. I have been on that for years. So many counties around do have them, and there are so many people who would love to help take care of them, so let’s quit talking about it and do something to make it happen.”
— Boonsboro
“This is to the caller who was complaining about Maryland not recognizing common-law marriages, and why should it recognize gay marriage? Well, common-law marriages aren’t real marriages, so of course, they’re not going to be legal.”
— Hagerstown
