Rita Rose Pope, 87, of 107 Grand Oak Drive, Hagerstown, Md., passed away Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at her home.

Born Sunday, Feb. 10, 1924, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ambrose McAndrew and the late Marie Schray McAndrew.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert Shutta, in 1969.

She graduated from Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre, in 1942.

She was employed at Edmund J. Flynn Co. in Washington, D.C., retiring after 25 years of service.

She volunteered at Montgomery General Hospital in the mid-80s, and also at Ravenwood Lutheran Village in 2002. She also enjoyed her W.W. Lunch Bunch and the Washington Redskins, reading and crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Charles H. Pope Jr.; one daughter, Judith Ann Shutta of Silver Spring, Md.; a son, Robert Michael Shutta and wife, Pat, of Edgewater, Md.; stepsons, Jeffrey Pope and wife, Debbie, of Hamstead, Md., and Randy Pope of Walkersville, Md.; mother-in-law, Evelyn Pope of Mount Airy, Md.; three brothers-in-law, Howard Pope and wife, Carolyn, of New Market, Md., Bill Pope and wife, Donna, of Mount Airy, and David Pope of Essex, Md.; sister-in-law, Nancy Hahn of Tazwell, Tenn.; numerous nieces, nephews and stepgrandchildren; and her faithful canine friend, Annie.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, at 11 a.m. at  St. Joseph Catholic Church, 17630 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Christopher Moore as celebrant.

Family will receive friends at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15.

Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
