Shippensburg man struck and killed by train

February 12, 2011

Authorities believe the headphones that a man was wearing made it hard for him to hear an oncoming train that struck and killed him Saturday morning in Franklin County, Pa., Pennsylvania State Police said.

The victim, Clinton Atwood Walker, 46, of Shippensburg, Pa., was pronounced dead at the scene, a state police news release said.

The accident happened at about 10:55 a.m., when Walker was struck from behind by the train as he was looking for loose scrap metal on the railroad tracks between Mount Rock and Pine Stump roads in Southampton Township, troopers said.

In addition to the headphones, authorities believe that noise from a nearby interstate made it difficult for Walker to hear the train, the release said.

The train's warning horn was sounded numerous times before Walker was struck, authorities said.
