BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — Cletus R. "Slim" McCumbee, 86, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at his home.

Born July 9, 1924, in Berkeley Springs, he was the son of the late Charles Clifton and Margaret Yost McCumbee.

He was a member of Berkeley Springs Church of Christ. He attended Fairview School. Slim had worked in metal fabrication at Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown and later worked in the paint department at Yost Building Supply in Berkeley Springs.

He sang and played the mandolin and stand-up bass with The McCumbee Family and Sammy Moss and The Blue Ridge Mountain Boys, and also played backup with Jim McCoy, performing occasionally with Patsy Cline.

He is survived by one son, Kent Arthur "Brooks" McCumbee and his wife, Robin, of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Carol Jones of Fairfield, Pa., and Phyllis Smith of Reading, Pa.; three brothers, George "Sonny" McCumbee and Harry "Bud" McCumbee, both of Berkeley Springs, and Dennis McCumbee of Ocala, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Irene Rankin McCumbee, on June 12, 2009.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 95 Union St., Berkeley Springs, with Ed Floyd officiating. Interment will be in Greenway Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the convenience of family and friends.
