Joseph E. "Gene" Straley Sr., 84, of Williamsport, Md., passed away Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown.

Born May 8, 1926, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Roy Bentley and Beatrice Ann Bowers Straley.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Anne Carter Straley, in 1986.

He was employed by Potomac Edison until retiring in 1990.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean War.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsport. He served on the church council for many years.

He was a life member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion, where he served on the honor guard, and was a member of 40/8 and the Korean Last Man's Club. He was also a life member of AMVETS Post 10 VFW, Hagerstown. He was a past member of IORM Conococheague Tribe 84, Williamsport.

Survivors Include daughter, Pamela J. Plunkard, of Hagerstown; daughter, Lora L. Hahn, of Camargo, Ill.; daughter, Julie A. Moser, of Hagerstown; son, Joseph E. Straley Jr., of Hagerstown; son, Mark L. Straley, of Hagerstown; son, Bentley L. Straley, of Halfway, Md.; sister, Medessa Nalley, of Downsville, Md.; brother, James Straley, of Falling Waters, W.Va.; seven grandchildren, and eight great- grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Jeannette Peacher and Lauraetta Householder; and three brothers, Claudius Straley, Roy Leon Straley and Phillip Straley.

The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral home will be open after 1 p.m. on Sunday for the convenience of family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsport, on Monday, Feb. 14, 2011, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. W. Gregory Martin officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport. Military graveside services will be provided by AMVETS Post 10 and Morris Frock Post 42m Hagerstown.
