February 11, 2011

SMITHSBURG — A multistate police chase ended in Cavetown early Friday when the fleeing car crashed into a house in the 22000 block of Goose Street, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department said.

The incident began just after midnight when Washington Township (Pa.) Police attempted to stop a car in the area of 13321 Midvale Road in Rouzerville, Pa., according to a Washington Township Police Department press release.

The car, a Nissan, fled and crossed into Maryland, according to the press release.

The Sheriff’s Department was notified at about 12:02 a.m. of a possible pursuit from Franklin County, Pa., Sgt. Robert Willis said.

After the car crashed, both occupants fled on foot, Washington Township Police said.

A Maryland State Police helicopter was called to assist with a search, Willis said.

The passenger was later located, but the driver was not, Washington Township Police said.

The passenger, a man, had not been charged as of about 10:30 Friday morning, Washington Township Police Department office administrator Cathy Fleagle said.

An investigation was continuing, Fleagle said.
