HAGERSTOWN — The Hagerstown Community College women’s basketball team pulled off a 180-degree turn Thursday that would have made any extreme athlete proud.

Trailing 24-21 at halftime, the Hawks outscored Harford Community College 54-14 in the second half to take a 75-38 Maryland JuCo Conference win over the Fighting Owls at the HCC athletic complex.

“It was an outstanding second half,” HCC coach Marlys Palmer said. “Defensive intensity caused the big turnaround. The defensive intensity led to some easy buckets which energized the team and that made the team play even better. We held them to four baskets in the second half. I think the team understands that we have to play defense really well.”

Sophomore point guard Tiarra Rogers had 12 points, 10 assists and six rebounds for the Hawks (19-5, 9-4).

“We came out sluggish,” Rogers said. “We knew that we had to pick up our defensive intensity. Once we started picking it up, we also started having fun with that. We were so uptight in the first half, but then we came out loose in the second. Our defensive play got our offense going.”

Alessandra Flores had 14 points, five assists and five steals, while Tashia Caldwell scored 12 points for HCC. Kisha Jackson pulled down 11 rebounds, Turquoia Johnson grabbed 10 rebounds and Ricia Brown had seven rebounds.

Tiff Smith and Tiffany Taylor led Harford (10-16, 3-9) with 13 points each. Smith added eight rebounds and Taylor had seven rebounds.

Harford raced out to a 19-9 lead in the first 13 minutes, 35 seconds, but the Hawks chipped away at the lead, reducing it to three by halftime.

HCC scored the first seven points of the second half — a pair of free throws by Rogers, a 3-pointer by Caldwell and a basket by Brown — to take the lead for good.

The Hawks continued to pour it on after the break and took their biggest lead at the end of the game when Casey Roberts hit a 3-pointer with 3 seconds remaining.

The Hawks can give Palmer her 14th 20-win season today when they play at Lord Fairfax in Winchester, Va.
