Vernon Julian Lewis Sr., 92, formerly of 19800 Tranquility Circle, Hagerstown, Md., died on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at Ravenwood Nursing Home, where he was a resident.  

Born Sept. 21, 1918, in McHenry, Va., he was the son of the late Julian Burton and Mary O'Dell Brookman Lewis.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucile O. Lewis, on Jan. 31, 2005.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Vernon was employed by Fairchild Industries for more than 45 years in the personnel department, retiring as director of corporate flight operations.

He was a life member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and a member of the Civil War Round Table.

He is survived by one son, Vernon J. Lewis Jr. and wife Bonnie of Hagerstown; two sisters, Evelyn L. Alme of Tyler, Texas, and Velma Whitlock of Winchester, Va.; and two brothers, Douglas Lewis of Warrenton, Va., and Arthur Ratliff of Romney, W.Va.    

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Welty and Ruby Nasselrod; and two brothers, Carlton H. Lewis and Ryland B. Lewis.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday at Mine Road Baptist Church Cemetery in Spotsylvania, Va. The Rev. James M. Eure Jr. will officiate.
Friends may call at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, on Friday from 1 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Washington County, 13011 Maugansville Road, Hagerstown MD 21740; to the  Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown MD 21742; or to the charity of your choice.
