Each month, one student from each classroom at Hickory Elementary School is designated as a Character Counts! Good Citizens of the Month.
Students selected are nominated by classroom teachers for demonstrating one of the six pillars of character. Children who were chosen for this award celebrated with parents and guardians at an assembly Jan. 31.
The following students were honored: Jose Matashipp, Emma Gossard, Kristian Holloway, Wyatt McKean, Stanley Reed, Sarah Dawson, Natalie Kitchen, Malayia Bradley, Jackson Conroy, Megan Cline, Sophie Butts, Sabastian Reed, Jackie Vines and Brittany Reese.
Bicycling event
The Cycle United fundraising event to benefit United Way of Washington County will be held Saturday, Feb. 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Valley Mall in the space next to the Old Navy store.

Basket bingo
Western Enterprise fire hall will hold a Baskets and Bucks Bingo Sunday, March 20.
Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and bingo starts at 2 p.m.
There will be 14 basket prizes and 14 cash prizes. In addition, there will be raffles, tip jars, king tuts and 50/50s available. Food will be available.
Tickets cost $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
You must be at least 18 to attend.
The fire hall is at 526 Washington Ave. in Hagerstown.

Reminder to parents
Reminder to parents: Washington County Public Schools will be closed Monday, Feb. 21, for Presidents Day.
Registration
Girls ages 6 to 12 in the Washington County area are invited to participate in the Girls Fast Pitch Softball League, which will be held at Sharpsburg Little League for the 2011 season.
Registration will be held at Sharpsburg Bible Church, on the corner of South Potomac and West Antietam Streets in Sharpsburg, on the following dates and times:
Today from 6 to 8 p.m.; Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday, Feb.19, from noon to 4 p.m.
It costs $20 to register and a $50 fundraising fee will also be collected.
