Smithsburg Middle School Hoop Shoot winners

Congratulations to Bobby Fink, Jonah Smith, Brittany Fisher and Allison Cline, who won the Smithsburg Middle School Hoop Shoot competition sponsored by the Elks Lodge. They will represent SMS at the county level.

Women's Club

The Women's Club has canceled the cooking demonstration that was to be held Sunday, Feb. 20. The event will be rescheduled.

Flower and garden show

The Hagerstown Community College Alumni Association will present the Tri-State area's largest and most extensive floral event, the 17th annual Flower and Garden Show, on Saturday, March 12 and Sunday, March 13, at the College's Athletic, Recreation and Community Center.

This year's theme is "Not Just Your Grandmother's Garden!"

The event will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A variety of vendors will take part in the show. Show participants include experts in nurseries, lawn and garden equipment, pottery and statuary, landscaping, tree services, stone products, pools, spas, outdoor furniture, florists, wild bird products and natural gourmet gifts from the garden.

Seminars and demonstrations on a variety of gardening topics will be held continuously throughout both days of the event. In addition, area garden clubs will set up displays and quilt raffles will be held. Visitors are encouraged to bring their children to enjoy the gardening and activity area for kids. Lunch and snacks will be available at the Garden Café.

Admission costs $4 for adults and free for those younger than 12. Proceeds benefit the HCC Alumni Association.

Biotechnology program

HCC's biotechnology program began in 2007. The college held its first summer institute for high school students in 2009 and will hold the 2011 Biotechnology Summer Institute from June 10 to Aug. 4.

Participating high schools students can receive seven college credits. Tuition and fees are free for qualified ESSENCE students. Application deadline is March 18.
