In a pageant prelude to Miss Maryland, young women from all over the state will flash their first wave and smile on a Washington County stage Saturday.

The 2011 Miss Washington County/Miss Western Maryland scholarship pageant has been set for Saturday, Feb. 12, at Hagerstown Community College's Classroom Building.

The local pageant is part of the Miss America Scholarship Organization's pageant system. The new title holders — the competitions for Miss Washington County and Miss Western Maryland run concurrently — will receive scholarships and will advance to the Miss Maryland Pageant at The Maryland Theatre in downtown Hagerstown in June. The Miss Maryland winner advances to Miss America.

This year, the field of competition is wider.

Pageant organizers loosened geographic restrictions for the Miss Western Maryland title, which is now open to entrants from the entire state, said Barbara W. Carson, the organization's treasurer and publicity chair. Before, Miss Western Maryland contestants had to live or attend school in Garrett, Allegany, Washington or Frederick counties.

The Miss Western Maryland title was not offered in 2010 because there weren't enough entrants, Carson said.

According to a list Carson provided, six of the 10 contestants competing at the Miss level on Saturday don't live or attend school in Washington County.

As it has been in prior years, a teen pageant will run concurrently with the Miss competition, with contestants seeking the Miss Washington County Outstanding Teen and Miss Western Maryland Outstanding Teen titles.

The reigning Miss Maryland Outstanding Teen is Williamsport resident Mary Teal Mulligan, who will make an appearance Saturday.

There will also be appearances by 2010 Miss Washington County Mary King and 2009 Miss Maryland Brooke Poklemba.
