Mail Call - Feb. 4

February 03, 2011

"Guns not in our society: Weapons were always in our society, always, all the way back to cavemen, whether it was a club, rock, spear, bow and arrow. We will always have them, and there will always be nuts out there, a bad apple in the whole bunch. It will always be that way."

— Hagerstown

"The temperature at the White House must be kept quite cozy, for Michelle to wear all her sleeveless dresses. Here I sit shivering, at 65 degrees, worrying how I am going to pay for oil at $3.40 a gallon."

— Hagerstown

"How dare the local delegates place their beliefs onto me, and not allow me and others to marry who we choose to marry, because it may be of the same gender? This is ridiculous, and they do not speak for everyone."

— Hagerstown

"The other day, that Tea Party person wants the Democrats to form our own Tea Party. I don't get it. Does that mean the tea party he belongs to is a Republican Tea Party?"

— Hagerstown

"I see where Republicans want to (repeal) the 14th Amendment — in other words, do away with it. Well, be careful doing that, because if you did that, and it was passed, then none of us will be American citizens, because think about it: Our great-great-great-grandparents would not be American citizens then, when they were born, and that means none of us would. So be careful doing that."

— Hagerstown

"I live on the Leitersburg-Smithsburg Road, and a snow plow just nailed my mailbox, plowed it over and went on, and I'm wondering if there's anything I can do about it. I got an expensive mailbox, and I want to know if they're liable to repair it, fix it, replace it, whatever needs done. I'd like to know that, if you can give me some information."

— Leitersburg area

"I'm calling in reference to the articles about what religion God is. God is not a religion. Man created all the different religions. God is for all people, all religions. It doesn't matter what religion you are. It's if you have asked God to forgive you of your sins, and God's in your heart. That's who God is."

— Hagerstown

"Does anyone know if DVDs can be recycled? I keep many that I have no use for, and it seems a waste just to trash them if there is some other alternative."

— Cearfoss

"To the Clear Spring caller who said only police officers should be toting a gun: Everyone that cares to tote a gun could take the one's life that took another's, saving their own. Shed man's blood, yours will be shed."

— Hancock

"This is on global warming and the environment. You know, all this snow's coming around here, I don't know what happened to this climate change and global warming, because we had snow like this back when I was a kid. I'm 65 years old. We had  snow like this back when I was a kid, and cold weather."

— Hagerstown

"I'm calling in reference to the cutting back on the police force. I think that's a terrible idea. I think maybe we should start by lowering and freezing the mayor and the city council's salaries, and then bring in more business to Washington County. Higher paying jobs would keep money here in Washington County, because everybody's leaving Washington County and spending their money elsewhere. This has turned into a bedroom community in Hagerstown, and we need to generate jobs in Hagerstown."

— Hagerstown

"For all you people who think the Democrats need to start their own Tea Party: The word 'TEA' stands for 'Taxed Enough Already.' So we all know Democrats like to tax and spend, so no way they can have their own TEA Party."

— Boonsboro

"Can anyone tell me why Washington County schools are the only ones who wait until the morning to announce delays or closings? West Virginia, Virginia and other states announce it the night before. It's very aggravating to have to wait so late, because some parents need to find other arrangements for their children."

— Hagerstown

"To the person complaining about the new light at Smithsburg school complex: What is more important, the safety of our children or your ability to get to the school quickly? Try allowing your child to use the buses provided by our tax dollars — or walk, if in the area. They do walk all over town during non-school hours. This would help decrease traffic. Also check out the same backup of traffic at other schools. You might be surprised. Bottom line is, compare the life of a child to waiting a few minutes in a line of traffic."

— Smithsburg

"I'd like to know if there's an agency or someone I can contact about a landlord who does nothing to improve the renter's situation. I have a landlord that has let this building dilapidate, and my fuel tank, the fuel can't get up through the fuel tank into my furnace, so I'm doing without heat now because they refused when I asked them in May to correct the problem, to do anything."

— Hagerstown

"Unbelievable, 8 inches of snow, and they wait and cancel schools Thursday morning, when everybody else around here is canceling schools Wednesday night. Unbelievable. What is up? Why can't we find out sooner?"

— Hagerstown

"I was just reading in the paper Friday where everybody was complaining about our road crews do not do a good job. That's just untrue. We were in that mess for five hours, from Potomac to Virginia Avenue, and all streets on the side there. Then from Burhans, Franklin, Salem Avenue, and all streets on the side there, all the way down to Devonshire. We had no problem, not during the night of the storm, the morning of the storm, or today, Friday the 28th. Our street crews did a wonderful job, and we'll be out there again tonight, delivering the papers."

— Hagerstown

"I see where President Obama, after two years of pushing things through that the majority of the American people didn't want, he's trying to move to the middle and ... listening to what the American people want, especially growth in the economy."

— Williamsport

"I'm calling about   Shank and the AFSCME. I retired from the DOC down at the MCI in 2002, and all AFSCME's trying to do is get a closed shop. All they do — they're trying to get money from you, they don't do anything for you. Save your money, kids, because if you're sued by somebody, the state's attorney's office will cover you ... in the meantime, do not join. Like I said ... and ask what has your union done for you lately."

— Londontowne

"Have you noticed that so far the new county commissioners, none of the five have voted no on any vote? They need to start saying 'no' to staff, not doing what staff wants, and concentrate on paying off the debt."

— Washington County

"Gas is now $3 per gallon, but watch out, the czar appointed by President Obama said on the news that the price for gas should be on the same level as the European price. So watch out. It will increase."

— Hagerstown

"What will happen to the price of oil if a dictatorship takes over Egypt? We will all pay, and our already fragile economy will suffer more. When are we going to drill and stop depending on foreign oil that can hold us hostage?"

— Hagerstown
