Fire damages sports auto garage

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Fire between the ceiling and roof at McAfee Motorsports garage caused minimal damage Thursday, Waynesboro Fire Chief Dave Martin said.

"We got a pretty quick knockdown," he said.

Firefighters were called to the garage on Mentzer Gap Road north of Waynesboro at approximately 5:30 p.m. Martin said he was unsure whether any sports cars were in the garage when the fire broke out.

"It appears to be an accidental fire," Martin said, noting that the Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal was contacted as a precaution.

Firefighters vented the roof and performed some salvage at the site after the fire was extinguished. Responding departments were Waynesboro, Mont Alto, South Mountain, Blue Ridge, Fountaindale, Fayetteville and New Franklin.

No injuries were reported, Martin said.

Woman falls 15 feet from chairlift

MERCERSBURG, Pa. — A woman slipped out of a chairlift Thursday at Whitetail Resort, according to resort President Don MacAskill.

The incident happened shortly after she boarded the lift, and she fell about 15 feet, MacAskill said. She was taken to Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, Md.,  he said.

"I believe she's going to be just fine," he said.

The fall, which MacAskill said was human error and not related to equipment, happened during the "Operation Thank You" event for police, firefighters, emergency medical responders and members of the military.

Car crash at YMCA

A vehicle had to be towed from the scene of an accident last week on Eastern Boulevard in front of the Hagerstown YMCA.

Washington County Sheriff's Office Cpl. Dan Henley said the accident happened at about 8:50 p.m. on Jan. 28, when Smithsburg resident Erich Mackley pulled out of the YMCA parking lot and into the path of a truck that was being driven by Maxie Allen of Hagerstown.

Allen's 2004 GMC truck had to be towed from the scene, Henley said. Mackley was able to drive away in his 2003 Honda Pilot.

Mackley was found at fault for failure to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic, Henley said.

Plow hits car

A city snow plow damaged a legally parked vehicle while it was clearing a Hagerstown street during a snow storm on Jan. 26, Police Chief Arthur Smith said.

The accident occurred at about 8 p.m. in the 1000 block of View St., Smith said. Both vehicles sustained minor damage.

Hagerstown Public Works Director Eric Deike said no disciplinary action would be taken against the driver because snow plows commonly strike other vehicles when they are plowing narrow streets during storms.

"Our drivers try to be very careful," Deike said. "Sometimes we end up clipping mirrors. It's unfortunate, but it does happen."
