Mail Call - Feb. 3

February 02, 2011

"Let's wake up to the truth, that the money which we have paid in to Social Security is not in a lockbox. That lockbox is a bunch of IOUs. Our politicians decided to spend it on something else. If you and I would have done the same thing with someone else's money, they would have us in court and probably in jail."

— Boonsboro

"I work at an office, and I want to thank so much again the cab driver, Denny, for getting me and another co-worker of mine home. I'm physically disabled. I have trouble getting around in the snow, and he needs to be commended for his fine work. He's a good guy, and he's a good employee and all, and a good cab driver for safely getting me and another lady home. I want to thank him again so much."

— Hagerstown

"I just read in Mail Call about a person wanting to know why is there an East Church Street, why don't we have a West Church Street, and why not an East Church Street, why don't we just call it Church Street. Well, after all that — why,' why just not — I just thought that was a little funny. Huh, Why Street, that's the best street to call it, Why."

— Washington County

"In reference to the Clear Spring caller, I think it's very funny that they said that only police officers should have guns. Well, that would be nice, but they forgot that the criminals have guns, and that's why most people have a gun, to protect theimselves from the criminals."

— Martinsburg, W.Va.

"Why is the government borrowing money from other countries, when we get no interest on our money in the banks today? I will take my money out of the bank, lend it to the government for 1 percent or less. Let's all do this."

— Hagerstown

"This is for the Hagers-town caller who said the phrase, 'It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out' is outdated. So should the proper use be — space shuttle scientist'? I cannot figure out what phrase to use. Please help me. After all, I'm no rocket scientist — oops, I mean space shuttle scientist, I think. I don't know. Help."

— Hagerstown

"Not taking away from the poor people or poor children in our community, but wouldn't it be nice if Washington County opened up a no-kill animal shelter? There are so many animals that are killed each year in shelters. Isn't there a better solution than that?"

— Washington County

"I'm calling in response to the Clear Spring caller on Thursday the 27th of January, who said that guns have no use in our society; this is not the old West. You know, in part, you're right, this is not the old West, because in the old West, the good guys were allowed to carry guns."

— Washington County

"When the price of oil goes up by the barrel, service stations are raising their price immediately. But when the price of oil comes down by the barrel, it takes three, four, five days until the service stations lower their price. Please explain."

— Huyetts area

"Washington County Commissioners, are you going to follow the lead of the Frederick County Commissioners, and abolish your pensions, from this time forward? As a Frederick County commissioner said, they are paid very well for a part-time job, and should not receive a pension also. Remember, that pension is for life. Let's see who steps up to the plate on this one."

— Hagerstown

"I watched President Obama's State of the Union message last night. He thinks by making a larger government is hiring true jobs. True jobs is building manufacturing jobs."

— Williamsport
