Rivera to perform at church on Sautrday

Karla Rivera will perform at Hagerstown Seventh-day Adventist Church on Saturday at 4 p.m.  

Rivera's most recent visit to the Hagerstown church was with the Bella Voce Trio.

She has performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center.

The church is at 11507 Robinwood Drive in Hagerstown.

Chewsville Lions Club news

The Chewsville Lions Club quilt raffle was won by Christine Koterwas of Smithsburg.

A country ham and baked ham sandwich sale was held earlier this week.

Melissa R. Rice, program specialist at the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services, will be the guest speaker at the Tuesday, Feb. 15 meeting. She will discuss "Foster Care" and the local need. Her presentation will be at 7 p.m.

The public is invited.

The club meets at Bethel United Methodist Church, 21002 Twin Springs Drive, Chewsville.  

A roast beef dinner, catered by "Stop by and See," will be available at 6:15 p.m.

The meal requires reservation no later than Sunday, Feb. 13.

For those interested in learning more about the Lions Club and its functions, a Friendship Night will be held in March. The date and time will be announced at a later date.

Ballroom dancing set for Friday

Jim Powers will hold his ballroom dance party Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Maugansville Ruritan Club Building on Maugans Avenue.

Admission is $4 per person.

Money bonanza to be held at fire hall

Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Co. will hold a money bonanza Saturday, March 26, at the fire hall at  22 N. Main St. in Smithsburg.

The doors open at 5 p.m., and the meal will be served at 6 p.m.

Tickets cost $30 per ticket/couple.

The menu includes pit beef, baked beans, macaroni salad, cole slaw, macaroni and cheese, dessert and drinks.

No one younger than 18 will be admitted.

Diabetes support group to meet Feb. 9

The Diabetes Support Group at Potomac Towers will meet Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 1:30 p.m. in the first-floor community room.

The program will be on Medicare benefits for diabetes presented by the Washington County Commission on Aging.

The program is open to individuals who live at Potomac Towers and anyone in the community.

The agency provides a forum for educating individuals with diabetes to help manage their disease and to gain support from others.

Smithsburg Middle School news

MSA (Maryland State Assessment) test dates: All students will take the reading MSA March 8 and 9, the math MSA March 15 and 16, and the science MSA April 14 and 15.

Parents, please make note of these dates. No vacation requests will be approved for these testing dates.

HCC promotes 10 faculty members

Hagerstown Community College recently announced that 10 faculty members have received promotions.

They are:

Elaine Ashby was promoted from associate professor to professor, biology and chemistry

Richard Campbell was promoted from instructor to assistant professor, developmental mathematics

Thomas Crawford was promoted from assistant professor to associate professor, mathematics and business

Joseph Mason was promoted from assistant professor to associate professor, mathematics

Melinda May was promoted from assistant professor to associate professor, English and humanities

In addition, Carrie Hawbecker, assistant professor, developmental mathematics; David Karstaedt, assistant professor, anatomy and physiology/microbiology; Joseph Marschner, assistant professor, music/drama; Veronica Stein, assistant professor, chemistry and physical science; and Patricia Williams, assistant professor, practical nursing, were each granted tenure.
