DA says drug sweep is Franklin County's largest in several years

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Arrests made in a recent drug sweep involved people alleged to have sold a variety of narcotics, including crack cocaine, Ecstasy, Percoset and heroin, the Franklin County, Pa., district attorney said last week.

Of 35 arrest warrants issued, more than 20 people have been accounted for, District Attorney Matt Fogal said. Those people were either arrested or already in custody on other charges.

Authorities will continue to attempt to serve the other warrants, Fogal said.

While focused on Franklin County, officials said the investigation spilled into Fulton, Adams, Cumberland and Dauphin counties in Pennsylvania, and Washington County in Maryland.

“Some of our warrants were served in the Harrisburg area,” Fogal said of Pennsylvania’s state capital.

Some of the people arrested had direct connections to others in the sweep, Fogal said.

“It’s not unusual for one to lead to another,” he said.

The Franklin County Drug Task Force, which has full-time detectives, is headquartered in the district attorney’s office. Fogal described the task force as “an intelligence collection point” and said it works closely with federal authorities.

“We have more federal resources now really than we ever had,” he said, saying federal charges can carry extra sentences.

The  Jan. 20 sweep started at 6 a.m. and was the largest one in the past couple of years, Fogal said.

The district attorney said drug activity in Franklin County mimics national trends, particularly with increased abuse of prescription medications. He said he’s personally concerned about heroin in the communities because of its addictive nature.

Fogal has been hosting presentations for middle-schoolers in an effort to prevent young people from trying drugs. The Franklin/Fulton County Community Coalition for the Prevention of Substance Use and Abuse is developing programs for teenagers.

“I think youths are always the focus,” Fogal said of early intervention.

Other deterrents for crime are seeking serious punishments and adding sentencing enhancements when possible for things like illegal activities in school zones, Fogal said.

“The overall message is we’re going to forfeit your property and put you in jail for as long as we can, so the idea of moving here from a city to sell drugs is a very bad idea,” Fogal said.
