Blazers battle bravely but Rebels hold on

HAGERSTOWN — Like a swarm of gnats on a hot, humid day in August, the Clear Spring girls basketball team just wouldn’t go away.

Trailing by 15 points in the fourth period, the Blazers pulled within six with 41 seconds left, but were unable to get any closer as South Hagerstown escaped with a 56-48 MVAL Antietam win Friday night.

“Nobody had anything left in the tank when it was over,” said Clear Spring coach Adam Hoopengardner. “This was our best team game all year.”

Unlike most late-game rallies, the Blazers (2-13, 0-10) did most of their damage from the free throw line after getting fouled scrapping for loose balls under the basket. In fact, Clear Spring made just 10 field goals all night, but drained 27 of 39 attempts from the foul line (69 percent).

With the Rebels (3-10, 2-7) leading 45-30 with 5:28 left, Clear Spring — behind Jess Barnhart and Alexa Mills — reeled off 17 of the next 25 points. But a free throw by Dejaih Johnson and a Katrice Dickson bucket in the final 31 seconds kept the Blazers at bay.

“At the end we had just enough composure to pull out the win,” said Rebels coach Amy Deeds. “We’re struggling to find a leader. People step up in different situations, but there’s no consistency.”

After bolting to a 16-6 first-quarter lead, South had every opportunity to put the game away. Clear Spring, with 13 first-half turnovers, was having problems controlling the ball and was unable to find its shooting touch.

But the foul line kept the Blazers within reach, training 29-19 at the half.

A pair of Courtney Showe buckets to open the third period gave South a 14-point edge, but Becca Dunning, Heather Schlotterbeck and Barnhart combined to hit 5 of 6 free throws and the Blazers trailed 39-28 entering the final eight minutes.

Dickson finished with 14 points, while Maya Helms added 12 and Alexis Small chipped in 11 for South.

Barnhart scored 23 points and Mills added 13 points to spark Clear Spring.

JV: South, 60-19 (SH: Tayana Stewart 17; CS: Samantha Staley 8).
