Volunteers needed at battlefield

January 28, 2011

SHARPSBURG — The Division of Natural Resources Management at Antietam National Battlefield is looking for volunteers for Natural Resources Volunteer Crew.

This is a new subset of the battlefield's VIP (or Volunteers in Parks) program which emphasizes working on projects that are part of the Natural Resources program.

Projects will primarily focus upon restoration activities such as tree planting, establishing and reinforcing riparian buffers, planting and maintaining native wildflowers, and pulling and bagging invasive plants.

The group will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 19, at the battlefield at the Mumma Farm Education Center, 5923 Mumma Farm Lane, Sharpsburg. Prospective volunteers will learn of some of the ongoing projects as well as find out what their respective roles will be.

For directions or more information, contact Debbie Cohen at 301-432-2243, ext. 13, or e-mail debbie_cohen@nps.gov.
