Scholarships available for county students

The Washington County Retired Educational Personnel Association is offering six $1,000 scholarships.

The association is making scholarship applications available to all Washington County Public Schools seniors, graduating juniors and to college students who have graduated from a county public school under the jurisdiction of the board of education, who are aspiring to become teachers.

Applications are available in the guidance offices of all public high schools or can be picked at the central office of the board of education at 820 Commonwealth Ave.

Senior center  

Friday — Cards/dominoes, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; "Walk Away the Pounds," 11 a.m. to noon; strength training, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; chair yoga, 1 to 2 p.m.

Monday, Jan. 31 — Line dancing, 10  to 11 a.m.; Salsa dancing, 11 to 11:30 a.m.; cards/dominoes, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; "Walk Away the Pounds," 11 a.m. to noon; strength training, 1 to 2 p.m.

Stress and weight

The Washington County Health Department has been offering classes for EBT: A Scientific Solution for Stress and Weight, which started this month.

The program is a study that has been developed for individuals struggling with weight issues focusing on the the root of the problem: stress.

The class will educate individuals on what drives the need to overeat sugary, fatty foods and how to rewire themselves for healthy eating habits. The method based for the class is research in brain science and is conducted by certified individuals.

Lunchtime classes will be held at the Hagerstown YMCA on Mondays, Hagerstown Community College on Wednesday, Discovery Station in downtown Hagerstown on Thursdays, and at the Washington County Health Department on Fridays.  A class will also be held in Brunswick, Md., on Monday evenings.
