Clyde Harry Roberts, 87, of Hagerstown, Md., died Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, in Reston Hospital, Reston Va.

Born June 12, 1923, in Sandusky, Ohio, he was the son of the late Harry J. and Elsa (Baum) Roberts. He was the husband of 59 1/2 years to Janet Everline Roberts of Hagerstown.

Clyde graduated from Sandusky High School, where he played baseball. He graduated from Cleveland Art Institute and Case-Western Reserve University with a bachelor's degree. After teaching art in Ashtabula, Ohio, for two years, he attended Columbia University, where he earned his master's degree.

He was the first art teacher in Washington County in 1949 at the Hagerstown High School. Seven years later he taught at South Hagerstown High School. He moved on to teach art on Educational Television for elementary children in Washington County for 11 years. During this time, he was in Nigeria for the U.S. Agency for International Development, training artists, and was later an educational consultant in India. He finished his career with the Washington County Public School system as a supervisor of art.

Clyde taught art classes part-time at the Hagerstown Junior College, and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. After retirement, he taught drawing and painting at Shepherd College and Penn State/Mont Alto. He taught adult watercolor and drawing classes in Washington County for many years.

Clyde was a member of the Washington County Retired Educational Personnel Association, the Maryland State Teachers Association and the National Education Association. He was a life member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society, a signature member of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, a member of the Chambersburg Art Alliance, the Valley Art Association, the Studio Club of Waynesboro, listed in the Who's Who in American Art and a member of the Elk's Club, Lodge No. 378.

Clyde's paintings won many regional and national awards. Many of them are in collections in the area. Traveling was a passion. He visited all the continents and all 50 states.

Clyde was a member for over 59 years of Zion Reformed UCC, where he served on the consistory as Sunday school superintendent, and as a teacher of adult Sunday school.

In addition to his wife, Clyde is survived by a son, Kent F. Roberts, and wife Pam, of Shippensburg, Pa.; a daughter, Cindy L. Downs, and husband Andy, of Clear Spring, Md.; and two grandsons, Alan Downs of Shippensburg and Kyle Downs of Clear Spring; and a sister, Ruth Reiter of Sandusky.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan., 29, 2011, at Zion Reformed United Church of Christ, Hagerstown. The Rev. Dr. R. Terrance Foor will officiate. Internment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
