Hagerstown man charged with DUI in tractor trailer accident

January 25, 2011

A Hagerstown man was charged with drunken driving  Tuesday night after the 1998 Honda Passport he was operating on Md. 63 struck an oncoming tractor-trailer and rolled over, police said.

James Richard Harris, 30, was taken to Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown with minor injuries, Maryland State Trooper Lee Cain said.

The 6:45 p.m. crash, which occurred near the Pilot Travel Center, happened when the northbound Honda Passport crossed the center-line and sideswiped the tractor trailer, Cain said.

After Harris' vehicle rolled over, some passersby helped him out of the vehicle, Cain said.

The tractor-trailer was being driven by William Russell Thomas of Hagerstown, Cain said.

Harris was charged with driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license, failure to keep right of center and negligent driving, Cain said.
