FEB. 2, 1917-JAN. 21, 2011

SYKESVILLE, Md. — Mary Barbara Baxter Stottlemyer was born Feb. 2, 1917, at the stone house in Thurmont, Md.

She was the only child of Russell Nevin Baxter and Eleanor Lee Miller Baxter.

After graduating from Thurmont High School, she went on to graduate as an RN from the Washington County Hospital School of Nursing in 1938. That same year, she married John Ray Stottlemyer.

After their son, Bob, was born in 1940, they moved to Springfield, Vt., and lived there for six years, where they celebrated the birth of son Alan in 1943. Moving back to Maryland, the family lived on Pennersville Road in Cascade, where Mary lived for 60 years. Two more children were born there: son Warren in 1947, and daughter, Laura, in 1953.

Mary Barbara pursued her nursing career as a private-duty nurse and office nurse in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. As a second career, Barbara started teaching at Cascade Elementary School as a kindergarten aide, and later as a special-education teacher. She continued to nurture her students throughout their academic years.

Mary Barbara was a devoted reader, something she continued all her life. She was also an avid traveler, always interested in new places to visit. While raising her children, these visits took the form of camping trips. Each year saw something new: New England, Canada and the western U.S., as well as loved standards such as Assateague Island and Cape Hatteras. After retirement, she and John took several trips on the East Coast and out West, culminating in their trip to Alaska.

While at home, she was a good neighbor and volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Homewood, Hoffman Home, St. Stephens Church and Trinity United Church in Thurmont.

Mary Barbara passed away in Sykesville on Jan. 21, 2011, just shy of her 94th birthday.

She was predeceased by John and Warren in 2004.

She is survived by J. Robert, Alan (Dorothy) and Laura Stottlemyer (Wilson Felder); and two grandchildren, Will and Julia Felder.

A private graveside service will be held in Thurmont.

Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Summit Free Library, Box 34, Blue Ridge Summit, PA 17214.
