Water main break closes Chambersburg school

January 24, 2011

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — A broken water pipe led to the cancellation of classes Monday at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, but school officials said necessary repairs were made so a regular schedule could be in place Tuesday.

“All systems are up and running,” Assistant Superintendent Eric Michael said.

Custodians who arrived at the school at 5 a.m. Monday found the problem in a first-floor boiler room, Michael said. Although the room has drains, some of the water had frozen on the floor, he said.

“Those floors are designed to have water on them,” Michael said.

He said the school community continues to move from old portions of the building to newly constructed ones. The break occurred in a new boiler area.

A problem with the ventilation system allowed for freezing, Michael said. School officials were working with an engineer to determine what happened, he said.

An extra part is being ordered to keep as a backup, according to Michael.

A part being installed Tuesday should interrupt water service for no more than 30 minutes, he said.
