Washington County Library sponsoring writers, poets contest

January 24, 2011

Washington County Free Library is inviting all writers and poets to submit an entry to the 2011 Writers and Poets Contest.

The library will accept poems and short stories until the end of March.  Poems and stories will be judged in five age divisions: grades 2 to 3, grades 4 to 5, grades 6 to 8, grades 9 to 12 and adults.

Entrants may submit up to two poems and one short story for consideration. Poems may not exceed two typed pages.  The library asks that short story entries be double spaced and not exceed 5,000 words.

Contest entrants must be residents of Washington County or hold a valid Washington County Free Library card.

The short stories and poems may be on any topic and in any style. All works must include author’s name, address, phone number and age division on the submission. All entries must be postmarked by March 31.

There will be two winners selected in each category for each age division.  Winners will receive a prize bag, publication in the 2011 Washington County Authors Anthology and recognition at the Spring Award Banquet on Friday, May 6, beginning at 6 p.m. at Homewood Suites by Hilton at 1650 Pullman Lane in Hagerstown. Children’s author Jarrett Krosoczka will be the guest speaker for the event.

Poetry winners will read their poems to the audience. Short story winners will be asked to talk a little about the story they wrote.

Entries may either be delivered to any library branch in the county or bookmobile or they may be submitted by mail to: Writers and Poets Contest, Washington County Free Library, 59 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, MD 21740
