As every Hagerstown teen knows, there isn't much to do in town on a Saturday night. Right?

That's not true for Saturday, Jan. 29, when Youth United Way hosts Rock Fest 2011 at Leitersburg Cinemas, north of Hagerstown.

Doors open at 4 p.m. Tickets cost $4 for those 18 and younger and $6 for adults.

Rock Fest is a fundraiser for Youth United Way, an organization that supports local youth causes. The organization is run completely by Washington County youths who want to see the impact they can make in the community.

The weekend event will feature up-and-coming bands from the area including Defyance and Stone the Crow. Bands will compete in front of fans and in front of judges from 101.5 Bob Rocks, one of the partners of the event, for prizes. Jackson Hewitt Tax Service and Leitersburg Cinemas also have partnered with Youth United Way.

Rock Fest chairman Sean Cremins said he hopes this event to be the kick off of many annual rock fests by Youth United Way.

"It's been stressful, but productive," said Cremins, a senior at North Hagerstown High School. "I learned the hard way how difficult it is to plan an event like this, but also gained some leadership experience in the process. I feel Rock Fest 2011 will be a great time for people of all ages."

And it looks like there's already early buzz about Rock Fest from fellow teens.

"I heard about it from the community and from our schools SGA" said Jackie Stewart, a North High junior who plans to go to Rock Fest. "I'm really excited. And I think Rock Fest is going to be a lot of fun and a great way to make new friends."

The Youth United Way's goal is to raise $15,000 for the year, all of which goes to those local causes.

Bryan Willis, a senior at North High and also a member of Youth United Way, said he hopes to draw a lot of community support with Rock Fest.

"For the past several months, Youth United Way has been working hard to bring about the means for change in the community that we all are eager for.

"In a sense, we have organized several events to be donation tools; like the Rock Fest. By going to the event, not only will you be contributing to positive change, but you will also be able to enjoy another big music event that is new to the county"
