HAGERSTOWN, Md. — Ernest W. Braithwaite, 74, passed away Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md.

Born June 24, 1936, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late Paul Braithwaite Sr. and Lucy Jane “Hatter” Braithwaite.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mary Elizabeth “Smith” Braithwaite, in December 2010.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War.

He attended North Hagerstown High School and retired from Fort Detrick.

He was a member of Hagerstown Elks Lodge 378, Hagerstown VFW, The Improved Order of Red Men Tribe 84, the National Rifle Association, Western Maryland Sportsman’s Club, Medairy Lodge 140 AF & AM of Williamsport, 32 degree, and a member of the Scottish Rite.

Ernest was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He enjoyed gardening and was a Civil War collector.

Surviving him are two daughters, Christie Ecton and husband, Mike, of Hagerstown, and Cindy Vining of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.   

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Juanita Kline; and two brothers, Paul Braithwaite Jr. and James Braithwaite.

Services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring, Md. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, with military honors by the Tri-State Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. only. Masonic services will begin at 6 p.m.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Clear Spring, Md.
