January 23, 2011

Two Warfordsburg, Pa., men who were involved in a single-car crash Friday night on U.S. 40 that claimed the life of a Hancock man were still being treated at Meritus Medical Center Sunday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Travis Michael Shives, 22, remained in stable condition and David Wertz, 20, was still in guarded condition at the medical center Sunday night, the spokeswoman said.

Shives and Wertz were riding in a 1997 Toyota sedan being driven by Thomas James Kratz, 19, of Hancock, police said.

Kratz was driving west on U.S. 40 just west of the Shamrock Inn when the car went off the south side of the road and struck a tree before landing in a ravine at about 7:26 p.m., according to police.

Kratz was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
