Hubs come out on defensive against Clear Spring

CLEAR SPRING — The North Hagerstown boys basketball team rolled into Clear Spring on Friday night with a chip on its collective shoulder. The sting of last week’s tough 75-73 loss to Catoctin was still fresh on the Hubs’ minds, especially head coach Kevin Hartman’s.

“We just had to come out and play with more energy, especially after that loss to Catoctin,” said Hartman. “It had to start on the defensive end.”

After falling behind early, the Hubs surged past the Blazers, cruising to a 77-47 MVAL Antietam victory.

While the phrase “good defense leads to good offense” may be cliché, the Hubs (7-4, 5-2) used their defense to its fullest potential. Utilizing a swarming full-court press, they forced 12 Clear Spring turnovers in the first quarter alone and used a 16-0 run to take a 23-8 lead that they didn’t relinquish.

“We can’t come out and play with fear,” said Clear Spring coach Ryan Grabill. “We had 12 tunovers in the first quarter and the game was over from there.”

Not only were the Blazers (6-6, 3-5) stymied by the North defenders, they couldn’t put up much defense of their own as North took full advantage of its fastbreak opportunities, scoring 24 points in transition.

“It’s not like they were working. They scored many easy layups on us in transition,” said Grabill.

Clear Spring did outrebound the Hubs, 35-20. Donald Shilling led Clear Spring with 10 rebounds and a game-high 17 points.

“When your leading rebounder only has four rebounds, that is something that needs to be addressed,” said Hartman. “That’s what we’re going to work on in practice tomorrow.”

Alijah Benson led North with 15 points off the bench as 11 of 13 Hubs scored. D.D. Dickson added 12 points, while Max Psillas had six points and four assists.

JV: North, 61-41 (NH: Eli Boykin 16; CS: Tyler Walling 12).
