Williamsport rips Catoctin to stay unbeaten

WILLIAMSPORT — Much like it did in December, Williamsport’s boys basketball team coasted to an easy victory over Catoctin on Friday night.

It wasn’t necessarily an artistic achievement.

The unbeaten Wildcats ripped through Catoctin 76-43 to maintain its unbeaten mark through 12 games and go 7-0 in the MVAL Antietam. In December, Williamsport beat Catoctin, 85-53.

“I’m pleased we got the win, but not the way we got it. The whole thing was ugly,” said Wildcats coach Scott Mowbray.

Ugly on the part of Catoctin at the outset, as Williamsport’s tenacious defense caused seven turnovers in the first four minutes, which paved the way for an 11-0 lead. Catoctin (2-9, 2-6) had 12 turnovers in the first quarter and the Wildcats parlayed them into a 22-2 lead after eight minutes.

“The defense set the tone early and we got quick, easy baskets,” said Mowbray.

The big lead enabled Mowbray to substitute early and freely through the game, with the second team playing nearly as much as the starters.

Senior guard Connor Arnone had one of his better games of the year with 16 points, hitting 7 of 10 from the floor.

“(Connor) played solid and was more in the attack mode on offense,” said Mowbray.

Continuing what has become a ritual lately, junior Tyler Wise again had a double-double, contructing a 19-point, 10-rebound performance.

“He brings the hard hat to work,” said Mowbray. “He’s always around the rim and gets to the ball.”

Stephen Christy had 13 points and Brandon McCauley added 10 for the Wildcats. Xavier Green scored seven points, and the Williamsport starting five shot 62 percent (29-for-47).

Catoctin was guilty of 30 turnovers on the night, but Williamsport wasn’t exactly sharp itself with 23.

“I think we might have looked past (Catoctin),” said Christy. “We were sluggish early. We’re still developing chemistry and don’t think we are close to being what we can be.”

Tyler Smith led Catoctin with 10 points.
