Walter Edward McCabe Sr., 90, of Hagerstown, Md., and formerly of Williamsport, Md., passed away on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family.

Born Aug. 19, 1920, in Passaic, N.J., he was the son of the late John Joseph and Ida Holster McCabe.

He attended technical school in Michigan and New Jersey.

He was employed by Mack Trucks for 23 years, until retiring in 1983. He previously worked for Wright Aeronautical in New Jersey. He owned and operated his own Gulf service station in Clifton, N.J., in the 1940s and '50s.

He was always taking classes to pursue his hobbies of woodworking, gardening and stained glass. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing and traveling.

He was a member of Elks Lodge 378 Hagerstown.

Survivors include his wife, Romaine Marie Gerrity McCabe, to whom he was married for 67 years, of Hagerstown; daughter, Jaclynne M. Rhodes of Hagerstown; son, Thomas J. McCabe of Aspen, Colo.; grandson, Tim J. Rhodes of Greendale, Wisc.; granddaughter, Brooke A. Rhodes of Hagerstown; granddaughter, Merrin L. McCabe of Fayetteville, N.C.; great-grandson, Colin Rhodes of Hagerstown; great-granddaughter, Kaiya Rhodes of Hagerstown; and great-grandson, William Rhodes of Greendale, Wisc.

Walter was preceded in death by one son, Walter E. "Skip" McCabe, who passed away in 1986 from cancer at the age of 35. He was also preceded in death by all of his siblings.

Funeral services will be held at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, Md., on Monday, Jan. 24, 2010, at 4 p.m., with Chaplain Mike R. Simane officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service on Monday until 7 p.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
