CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. Dorothy Bittner Smith Rowe, 89, of Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chambersburg, Pa., and previously of Cascade, Md., died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, at the home. She had been in failing health for several years.

Born Aug. 6, 1921, in Boynton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Howard and Mary Hersh Bittner.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leon D. Smith in 1986; son, Richard L. Smith in 2002; sisters, Irene Hook and Rita Jean Wilt, and brothers, John Bittner and Howard (Junior) Bittner.

She was a member of Chambersburg Church of The Brethren.

She graduated from Salisbury High School in 1939.

She was employed by Landis Tool Co. in Waynesboro, Pa., and Claire Frock Co. of Thurmont, Md., where she was a supervisor.

She is survived by her husband, Russell L. Rowe of Chambersburg; sister, Pauline Bittner LeRoy; daughters, Linda and Marlene in Tucson, Ariz.; daughter-in-law, Sarah H. Garver Smith of Cascade; granddaughter, Peggy A. Heiston of Cascade; grandson, Kenneth S. Smith of Rouzerville; stepdaughters, Linda R. Ahmed of Germantown, Md., and Jill R. DiZio of Marco Island, Fla.; stepgranddaughters, Karen L. Lantz and Lara M. O.S. Stover; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandson.

Services will be Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at 11 a.m. from J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, Md., with Pastor Darlene Stouffer and Pastor Jerry Timbrook officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery Cascade.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service from 10 to 11 a.m.
