Chambersburg man killed in silo accident

January 19, 2011

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — A Franklin County, Pa., man was killed Wednesday morning in a silo accident, according to Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner.

Rodney R. Hawbaker, 44, of Chambersburg died at 1809 Warm Spring Road in Hamilton Township, Conner said.

The accident was reported at 8:43 a.m., and Conner pronounced Hawbaker dead at 9:21 a.m., according to a news release.

Conner said in the release that Hawbaker's death was under investigation.

Marion Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Jerry Houpt, who was the incident commander, said Hawbaker was trapped in the corn silo's auger.

An auger, which is at the bottom of the silo, has blades on it that move grain or corn out of the silo.

Marion was the first to respond to the incident.

Also assisting were the Borough of Chambersburg Fire Department's Truck One and Letterkenny Army Depot's Hazmat team.

Houpt said the Hazmat team was at the scene because they are cross-trained in confined space rescue, which is what the silo incident was considered.

"We don't know how he got there, what caused him to get entangled in the auger," Houpt said.

"In my 26 years in the fire company in Marion, I've only been on (three) farm-related accidents," he said.

No other information was available Wednesday night.
