Mail Call - Jan. 19

January 18, 2011

“These are not my words, but those of an author I greatly admire, Walter Russell Mead. To me it explains the condition of the world and our country today: ‘It is not always possible to distinguish, even in one’s own mind, a degree to which bias, interest and prejudice have twisted reason to their own purpose. It is seldom that a nation or a class is convinced against its own interest or passion by the power of reason. In some cases, evidence or knowledge is insufficient to give us certainty. In others, it is clear that human beings cannot separate reason from interest and passion. ... More often than not, our minds simply dress the conclusions we would like to reach in colors of reason.’”

“I have a problem. There is a state police officer which patrols the Dual Highway which has a problem with tinted windows for some. I have set up and watched him pull over young kids with windows tinted too dark, but he let others ride right by with windows so dark that one window could be down and you couldn’t see in. This officer has double standards. Then he goes into court like he owns it. I look at it like this: What is good for one is good for all. So we either get rid of tint for all and when I say for all, I mean for police cars, as well as personal cars.”
— Washington County
“The obesity rate in Maryland is greater than 25 percent. Associated health care costs are upwards of $1.5 billion. The picture is even worse in West Virginia. Perhaps some of you (you know who you are) should stop grousing about bicycle lanes and start using them.”
— Hancock
“I’m from East Green Street. I was wondering, I can’t get no answers when we’re getting our new curbs put in. It’s a one-way street.”
— Funkstown
“To the person that’s calling in wondering what religion God is: God is no religion. God is his own being. Religion is man-made, and we should never believe in religion; we should believe in God. That’s what’s wrong with the world. Too many people’s gotten suckered into going to church because they think that is God-related.”
— Hagerstown
“Does anyone around the Hagerstown Tri-State area know where you can go dance to the ’70s and ’80s or disco? I love it. I’ve lost weight by dancing to it, and I think it is a great art. Dancing is forever. And you can enjoy it, and lose weight. Hopefully someone will comment on this. Believe me, dancing is life.”
— Hagerstown
“I just want to say that I don’t have anything against the motorists out there getting around by their means of transportation, which is by automobile, just as long as they don’t get into my business, of me getting around by my means of transportation, which is by bicycle. But I must ask some of you motorists out there, especially the Washington County caller, what are you people doing to help the environment? ... Probably nothing at all, except adding more to the problem.”

“I am calling about the 11 employees that were let go from the City of Hagerstown. When are they going to stop some of the take-home vehicles that are being driven miles both ways, back and forth to work, on our city’s gasoline? Why aren’t they going to set a limit of maybe no more than 10 miles each way?”
