Washington County students in grades five, six and seven who have an interest and talents in the visual and performing arts may apply for available openings in the CATS (Center for Artistically Talented Students) program.

Session I for fifth-graders will be Saturdays, Feb. 19 through March 12; and Session II for sixth- and seventh-grade applicants will be Saturdays, April 16 and 30, and May 7 and 14. Both sessions will be at Barbara Ingram School for the Arts on South Potomac Street in Hagerstown.

The program runs from 9 a.m. until noon. The application deadline is Jan. 28. Applications may be obtained from and submitted to Washington County Public Schools visual and performing arts teachers, or to the Office of Visual and Performing Arts, 820 Commonwealth Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Areas of enrollment include dance, vocal music, instrumental music (brass, woodwinds, strings, percussion), theater arts and visual arts.

On their applications, students should select a primary area of interest for the four-week sessions. Enrollment in each area, except for instrumental music, will be limited to 20 students. If applications exceed the enrollment limit in any area, a lottery system will be used to select participating students.

Parents/guardians will be responsible for transportation.

There is no cost for the program.
