HAGERSTOWN, Md. — Ralph Urban Schimmel, 84, of Hagerstown, passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at Williamsport Nursing Home.

Born Aug. 31, 1926, in Perth Amboy, N.J., he was the son of the late Authur and Dagmar M. (Lehman) Schimmel.

Mr. Schimmel was a 1951 graduate of Bradley University.

He retired from Mack Trucks, where he worked as a mechanical engineer, and was a member of the Golden Bulldogs and the Society of Automotive Engineers.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and a former member of Morris Frock American Legion Post No. 42.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Leitersburg.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha B. (Kuhlthau) Schimmel; one son, Darrell Schimmel and wife, Julie, of Hagerstown; one daughter, Karen Schimmel and husband, Robert Shuman, of Bronx, N.Y.; one brother, Warren Schimmel of Andover, Conn; and two grandchildren, Megan Schimmel and Marit Shuman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Owen Schimmel and Roger Schimmel.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour before services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ralph’s name to the Maugansville Goodwill Volunteer Fire Co., 13730 Maugansville Road, Maugansville, MD 21767; or to the charity of one’s choice.
