HAGERSTOWN — While Kemper Baker’s victories on the wrestling mat might seem countless, they’re not.

People have kept track of them.

The Williamsport senior went 5-0 at 140 pounds Saturday at South Hagerstown’s 30th annual Rebel Invitational, giving him 120 victories for his high school career — the most in Wildcats history.

Ryan McDonald, who graduated in 2001 with a 118-20 career mark, held the school record until Saturday.

“Coming in as a freshman and seeing that record, I thought, ‘I want to leave my mark at this school,’ and I thought that was the best way to do it,” said Baker, who is 22-1 this season and 120-17 for his career. “Of all the records, I thought that was the best one to have. And that’s what I set my sights on.”

In achieving that record Saturday, he also helped lead Williamsport to the overall title in the field of four teams.

The Wildcats beat James Buchanan 51-22 and then defeated South and Westminster each twice, by scores of 65-15 and 62-12 against the Rebels and 47-30 and 48-36 against the Owls.

Westminster finished second at 3-2, followed by JB at 2-3 and South at 0-5.

Williamsport, which also won the team title at North Hagerstown’s Hub Cup tournament last weekend, is now 15-0 in dual meets this season.

“It’s nice to continue to be undefeated,” Williamsport coach Mike Rechtorovic said. “The guys wrestled well today. It’s tough wrestling five matches in one day. ... It only gets tougher from here, though. We have to continue to improve and wrestle better.”

In the bout of the day, Baker, who’s ranked second in Maryland Class 2A-1A, defeated Westminster’s previously unbeaten Darian Meador, who’s ranked fifth in 4A-3A, 8-3.

Baker said the victory helped take away some of the sting from his 5-4 loss to Waynesboro’s Trey Andree in last weekend’s Hub Cup finals.

“I was looking forward to that match all week, because (Meador) is a great wrestler and, win or lose, it was going to be a great match,” said Baker, who pinned Kevin Macks in 19 seconds in the final match against the Owls. “I really wanted to come here and make a statement. This was a good way to rebound from the Hub Cup.”

Baker and JB’s Todd Meyers were named the invitational’s co-outstanding wrestlers. Meyers, the champ at 135, went 5-0 with five first-period pins.

Williamsport’s Bryan Davis (103), Zach Shoemaker (152) and Reggie Russ (171) also won their weight classes with 5-0 records.

Storm Giaffes (160) and Aaron Rowland (285) each went 5-0 to win titles for South.

“It feels good,” said Rowland, who was a Hub Cup champ last weekend. “I was expecting a challenge today, but it really wasn’t that hard.”

Austin Tucker (112), Trevor Meyers (130) and Devin Reed (215) also won titles for JB.
