Wildcats use balance to tip scales in their favor

WILLIAMSPORT — The Williamsport boys basketball team used an even-handed offensive attack against Smithsburg on Friday night to leave its record without a blemish.

Stephen Christy, Tyler Wise, Connor Arnone and Brandon McCauley each scored in double digits to lead the Wildcats to a 71-61 MVAL Antietam victory over the Leopards.

“We’ve had very balanced scoring all year and can pass the ball very well,” Williamsport coach Scott Mowbray said.

Christy led Williamsport with 20 points, Wise had 14 and Arnone and McCauley each added 11.

The Wildcats (10-0, 7-0) got it done at the foul line, too. They went 18 of 21 as a team to post a free-throw percentage of 85.7.

“We’ve struggled from the free-throw line so it was nice to see us covert them tonight,” Mowbray stated.

The Wildcats had a sloven start to the game, turning the ball over five times in their first six possessions. But they were able to get it together to command an 18-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

“We had some lethargic practices this past week and were very sloppy on offense,” Mowbray said. “But we were able to hit some shots and picked up the intensity on defense.”

A 3-pointer by McCauley in the closing seconds of the first half gave the Wildcats momentum and a 36-22 lead heading into the break.

“We battled,” Smithsburg coach Eric Gerber said. “We had some bad turnovers in the first half that led to points for them.”

Jordan Fortson led the Leopards (6-6, 4-3) in scoring with 20 points, while Aaron Dinterman added 13.

The Leopards faced a 53-38 deficit heading into the fourth quarter. They scored 23 points in the period, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

“We struggled with our halfcourt offense for most of the night,” Gerber said. “But that’s a credit to Williamsport’s defense; they’re a very solid team.”
