Phyllis J. Fowlkes, 73, of Richlands , N.C., went to be with the Lord Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, at Onslow Memorial Hospital, Jacksonville, N.C.

Born Jan. 25 1937, in Hagerstown, Md., she was the eldest daughter of the late Benjamin and Emma Davis.

Phyllis was a graduate of North Street School in Hagerstown. She was a stay-at-home mom and an in-home day care provider.

She is survived by two sons and one daughter. Gregory Fowlkes Sr. and wife Lorraine of Gaithersburg, Victor Fowlkes Sr. of Hagerstown, and Glenda Gantt and husband Willie of Richlands, N.C., and her devoted granddaughter who she raised, Rene’ Slaughter and husband Nicholas of Jacksonville, N.C.; 21 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by two brothers and one sister, Charles Davis and Ilene Smith both of Hagerstown and Gerald Davis (Linda) of Landover Hills, Md., and a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews and her friend of more than 50 years, Joe Fowlkes.

She was proceed in death by her son, Joseph B. Fowlkes Sr., and her daughter, Kimberly J. Fowlkes. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald Davis, Elwood Davis, Melvin Davis, and one sister, Ruth Ann Davis Monroe.

There will be a public viewing Saturday, Jan. 15, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Greater Campher Temple, King’s Apostle Holiness Church, 125 W. Bethel St., Hagerstown, MD 21740, Pastor Darrin Mency. The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 15, from 11:30 a.m. to noon and funeral services will begin immediately following at noon.

Officiating Apostle Eva M. Thompson of House of Deliverance, Richlands N.C.

Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
