County library holding annual Easy Picture Book Writing Contest

In celebration of Children's Book Week, May 2 to 7, Washington County Free Library will sponsor its fifth annual Easy Picture Book Writing Contest.

Beginner, as well as, experienced authors are invited to write and illustrate a children's picture book. Entries may be submitted through March 15 to any branch of the library or they may be mailed to: Easy Picture Book Contest, Washington County Free Library, 101 Tandy Drive, Hagerstown, MD 21740

The contest includes five age divisions: grades 2 to 3, grades 4 to 5, grades 6 to 8, grades 9 to 12 and adults.

Entrants must be a resident of Washington County or have a valid Washington County Free Library card. Only one entry per person will be accepted.  All text and illustrations in the book entries must be original work. All entries must include author/illustrator name, age division, address and telephone number.

There will be one winner chosen for each age division. The winner will receive a hardbound edition of his/her book. A copy of each winning entry will be placed in the library's collection.

The library will also recognize second- and third-place honors. These honorees will receive certificates of recognition and a gift certificate. A public reception honoring the winners will be held at the Smithsburg Branch Library on Wednesday, May 4, at 7 p.m. where the winners will read their books aloud to the audience.

Original work must be picked up by May 30. Entries will be returned to the branch where they were submitted for easy pickup. If you mailed your entry to the Tandy Drive address and would like it returned to you, please provide a self addressed stamped envelope with your entry.
