Washington Co. man flown to Meritus after being pinned by tree

January 14, 2011

SHARPSBURG, Md. — A Washington County man was flown to Meritus Medical Center Friday afternoon after being trapped under a fallen tree for several hours at his home near Sharpsburg, a Washington County Emergency Services dispatcher said.

The incident was reported at 3:57 p.m., when the man's wife came home and found him under the tree at 4310 Fernrock Lane, the dispatcher said.

"Apparently, it was on part of his arm," he said.

The man, in his 60s, had been trapped for about three hours.

In addition to the arm injury, the man was suffering from hypothermia and compartment syndrome, the compression of nerves and blood vessels within an enclosed space, the dispatcher said.

A Maryland State Police helicopter was called at 4:45 p.m. and left for the Hagerstown-area hospital with the man at 5:27 p.m., he said.

Sharpsburg Area Emergency Medical Services Inc., Sharpsburg Volunteer Fire Co. Inc. and Boonsboro Ambulance & Rescue Inc. also responded.
