Loyola prolongs Goretti's BCL losing streak

HAGERSTOWN — It took a few extra moments for the St. Maria Goretti locker room to empty on Friday night.

A positive outcome would have put an end to a nightmarish losing streak. Instead, the Gaels lost their 36th straight Baltimore Catholic League game, a 38-30 decision to Loyola Blakefield.

“We just have so little margin for error,” said Goretti coach Amrit Rayfield. “We had too many turnovers at the wrong time that didn’t give us an opportunity to score.”

Goretti’s shooting didn’t help. The Gaels (6-11, 0-6) shot 23.8 percent, hitting just 10 of 42 from the field. They also made just 7 of 13 free throws.

“Too many layups missed, too many point-blank shots missed,” said Rayfield.

The point-blank shots that missed really stung when Goretti had a chance to overtake the Dons (7-11, 1-4).

The Gaels never led, but they fashioned one rally that cut a 26-14 deficit with a 10-0 run in the third quarter, mostly through the hustling effort of Thomas Blake, who scored four points in the run and showed some tenacity on defense.

Dylan Leazier hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 5:06 remaining in the fourth quarter that cut the margin to 28-27, but the Dons answered with five quick points.

A 3-pointer from Yannick Zanfack got Goretti back within three, but the Gaels missed three opportunities in the paint after that.

Loyola got a clutch trey from Mitch Cross for a 36-30 lead with 1:25 remaining and Goretti was shut down.

“The kids are in pain. You are on your home floor, and from a talent matchup, we thought we were in a good position,” said Rayfield. “We’re still going to get a BCL win this year.”

Goretti got back into the game with a zone defense that flustered Loyola in the second half and the Dons committed 26 turnovers, compared to 22 for Goretti.

Blake led Goretti with 10 points and Zanfack had nine. Shae King had six rebounds for the Gaels.

Cross, Loyola’s first man off the bench, led the Dons with 14 points, including four 3-pointers.
