Indoor racing

The Soap Box Derby can't stop because of winter weather.

Hancock has a great indoor venue for racing these small vehicles.

Jan. 22 and 23 is the next race in Hancock to be held in the Stanley Fulton Business Complex west of downtown. Race time is 9 a.m. each day.

For more information, call Scott Fox at 301-678-6613.

Winterfest is Feb. 12

Winterfest, 2011, is coming up Saturday, Feb. 12, in Widmeyer Park.

As in other years, there will be snow sculpture contests, food, ice carving, music and other entertainment.

The town hopes to have the horse-drawn sled rides again this year.

If you wish to compete in the snow sculpture contest, call Sinclair Hamilton at 301-678-5719.

Help for family

On the morning of Nov. 17, there was a mobile home fire in nearby Warfordsburg, Pa., that claimed the lives of Jessica Brewer, 25, and her 5-year-old daughter, Trinity Swope. Two other children survived.

An account has been set up at M&T Bank to assist the children as well as help pay funeral expenses and grave markers.

A benefit for this memorial fund takes place Friday at the Log Cabin Inn on Md. 615, east of Hancock. Hours are 8:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.

Five bands are scheduled to perform with intermissions by RC McCoy.

There will be raffles and other games.

Donations may be made at any M&T Bank to the Brewer-Swope Memorial Fund.
