GIRLS BASKETBALL

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — Sarah Firestone’s putback of an offensive rebound with 5 seconds left gave Mercersburg Academy a 36-34 win over Lawrenceville on Sunday afternoon.

Firestone, who finished with 11 points, also scored the game-tying basket on a steal and layup with 45 seconds left.

Bailey Blake had 13 points, Firestone added nine rebounds and Nikki Wolny had three assists and three steals for the Blue Storm (2-7, 1-1).

POTTSTOWN, Pa. — Deanna Mayza had 17 points and Ellen Dvorak added 11 to lead Hill School past Mercersburg Academy on Saturday.
MacKenzie Brink had six points and Julie Garlick added five for the Blue Storm (1-7).

Heritage 53, MSD 51

FREDERICK, Md. — Heritage Academy held Maryland School for the Deaf to three points in overtime and pulled out a victory in the championship game of the Orioles Classic on Saturday night.

Callie Butts, who finished wth 10 points and eight assists, made a basket to give the Eagles (10-1) a 51-49 lead with two minutes left in overtime. After MSD tied it at 51, Jessica Gaylor made 1 of 2 free throws to give Heritage the lead back, and Butts made 1 of 2 free throws to make it a two-point cushion.

MSD had two opportunities to tie the game on shots inside the 3-point line as the final seconds ticked off, but missed both.

Rachel Clarke earned tournament MVP honors, scoring 22 points and grabbing 14 rebounds for the Eagles. Gaylor scored 10 points and made the all-tournament team. Kara Stamper added 12 rebounds and six blocks.

Heritage led by four near the end of regulation but turned the ball over twice. Claire Tucker — who scored 23 points for MSD — hit a basket and two free throws to tie the game and force overtime.
