HAGERSTOWN — Led by sophomore Lauren Johnson, Williamsport’s girls indoor track and field team prevailed in the extremely competitive MVAL Antietam Conference championships on Friday night at the HCC athletic complex.

Johnson won the 55 in 7.54 seconds, set a meet record in the 300 in 42.65 seconds and was the lead leg of the Wildcats’ 4x400 relay team — including Emily Snyder, Regan Stout and Renee Barnes — that won in 4:22.61. Williamsport scored 87 points, followed by Smithsburg (74 1/3), North Hagerstown (68 1/3), South Hagerstown (63) and Catoctin (50) to round out the top five.

“I was pretty nervous before the start of the (300),” Johnson said. “I feel like it was the support of my teammates that helped me across the finish line. I just gave it everything I had.”

“She had a big day,” Wildcats coach John Bailey said. “That’s the first 55 she’s run all year. She really stepped up, and that’s nice to get from a young runner. ... All the teams did well. I was a little surprised we were in it, but we had some good performances.”

Andrea Nunnally won the 55 hurdles in 9.73 seconds for Williamsport, which tied Catoctin for the most wins in the girls meet. The Wildcats’ four second-place finishes helped seal the victory, and they had 13 top-six finishes in all.

Smithsburg led the girls meet with 19 top-six finishes but had only five top-three finishes — two wins and three thirds. The wins came from Lauren Johnson in the 3,200 (12:47.96) and Jonelle Jerwick, who set a meet record by clearing 10 feet in the pole vault.

North’s girls had two wins — Emily Simmons in the 1,600 (5:43.39) and Charlotte Anderson in the shot put (31 feet, 9 inches) — and 15 top-six finishes to settle for third.

South’s girls had one win — a meet-record performance by the Rebels’ 4x200 relay team of Elizsha Streeter, Jasmin Johnson, Jaid Sandeen and Hayley Freeman, who won in 1:52.38 — and 11 top-six finishes to take fourth.

Catoctin won the boys team title with 99 points, with Boonsboro settling for second with 70 points and Williamsport taking third with 63 points. The Warriors tied the Cougars in events won with four, but Catoctin’s 18 top-six finishes were seven more than Boonsboro and Smithsburg.

Kenny Kopp won two events for the Warriors, setting a meet record in the high jump (6-1 1/4) and also taking the 55 hurdles (8.38).

“I’m coming off of strep and I was out of school Tuesday and Wednesday,” Kopp said. “I just had a good day. I felt real good today.”

Coby Gussio edged Catoctin’s Deven Patterson in the race of the day — the boys 500 — to set a meet record in 1:08.85. Gussio finished one-hundredth of a second ahead of the hard-charging Patterson, who beat Gussio in the 300 earlier in the meet.

“I’m so glad I won against him,” Gussio said. “It’s awesome to run against him. I know he’s going to be pushing me and I’m going to be pushing him. It was sort of like vengeance (for the 300).”

“That’s three school records for him in one day — the 300, the 500 and the trials of the 55,” Boonsboro coach Becky Walter said. “Coby and Kenny each set a meet record and I think that’s pretty impressive. ... We don’t have much depth, but what we have is working.”

John Lowery won the boys shot put with a throw of 50-6 1/2 for the Warriors.

Williamsport had three wins — two from Evan Hardy, who edged Clear Spring’s Jason Hill in the 800 (2:06.95) and 1,600 (4:35.81) — and 10 top-six finishes.

The Wildcats’ 4x800 relay team of Cody Gardenhour, Graylon Wright, Cody Grams and Cody Bowman set a meet record in 8:37.21.

North Hagerstown’s Anthony Winter — coming off Herald-Mail Offensive Player of the Year honors in football as a star running back — set a meet record in the 55 in 6.55 seconds.

“This was my first 55 of the year. I just went out there and ran,” Winter said. “I honestly didn’t think I was going to get it. It was a shock.”

In all, 11 meet records were set, including nine in the 20 events held on HCC’s new track.
