Practice helps Wildcats perfect winning streak

WILLIAMSPORT — The Williamsport girls basketball team earned its third straight win Friday night behind double-figure performances from Casey Arnone and Chelsea Scott.

Arnone led Williamsport with 12 points, while Scott added 11 in a 47-15 romp over Clear Spring in an MVAL Antietam matchup.

Arnone also led the Wildcats (3-6, 2-3) defensively with eight steals.

“I definitely get tired out there, but practice pays off,” Arnone said. “We played good defense, which helped out our offense.”

Williamsport started the game with a 6-0 run before turning to its stout defense to shut down the Blazers.

“I loved our defensive intensity,” Williamsport coach Chris Malott said. “From the opening tip, we played tough ‘D.’ I really like the pressure we put on them.”

Clear Spring (2-7, 0-5) turned the ball over 18 times in the first half — 37 total — and were outscored 27-7. The Blazers played better defense in the third quarter, holding Williamsport to three points. The only problem was Clear Spring didn’t score any.

“The shots weren’t falling for us and we couldn’t find a way to get points,” Clear Spring coach Adam Hoopengardner said.

“We held them to three points in the third,” Hoopengardner said. “We have to look for the little victories first and go from there.”

Clear Spring remained scoreless in the second half until the 3:57 mark in the fourth quarter.

“We’re going to win a lot if we can hold a team scoreless like that,” Malott said.

Williamsport was able to erased its third-quarter shooting woes by scoring 17 points to close out the game.

Amber Forrest led the Blazers with six, while Becca Dunning grabbed five rebounds and blocked three shots.

JV — Williamsport, 42-15 (W: Courtney Malott 12, Caroline Straite 11).
